A comparison of health care systems in Europe: structural trends in the face of Covid-19

In continuity with what has already been reported in a previous article on the different relationship between public and private in national health systems in the face of the Covid-19 threat, an attempt will be made here to give a comparative observation point to understand how the capacity to react in the present also depends on divergent structural trends in national health systems in Europe. And if indeed the “post Coronavirus” must be different from the “before”, it becomes more and more important to question the way it was before.

In continuità con quanto già riportato sul diverso rapporto tra pubblico e privato nei sistemi sanitari nazionali di fronte alla minaccia del Covid-19, qui si tenta di restituire un punto di osservazione comparata per comprendere come la capacità di reazione nel presente dipenda da tendenze strutturali divergenti dei sistemi sanitari nazionali in Europa. E se veramente il “dopo Coronoavirus” deve essere diverso dal “prima”, diventa sempre più importante interrogarsi sul com’era prima.

The Covid-19 virus has inevitably rekindled attention towards the balance of the health system and the different models of relationship between public and private not only in Italy but also on a global level. In fact, it’s clear how much of the American democratic primaries has been played on the different scenarios, proposed by the various candidates, regarding interventions on public healthcare. The national response to Covid-19 is closely dependent on the responsiveness of the health system and how public and private will work together.
